ACA extra savings

Cost-sharing reductions can make a Silver plan work differently.

Cost-sharing reductions, often called CSR or “extra savings,” are not the same as a premium tax credit. They can lower certain costs when you use care for people who qualify.

How CSR works

These savings focus on out-of-pocket costs.

For eligible Marketplace consumers, a cost-sharing reduction can lower deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum. Eligibility is determined by the Marketplace and the savings are available only with a qualifying Silver plan.

01

Check the plan category

Metal levels are not just price labels. A consumer who qualifies for CSR must select a qualifying Silver plan to receive those additional savings.

02

Compare the actual benefits

Two Silver plans can have different provider networks, prescriptions, deductibles, and copays. Read the plan’s current details before enrolling.

03

Consider expected care

If you expect office visits, prescriptions, or other care, compare what you will pay throughout the year—not only the monthly premium.

A practical reminder

Don’t assume Bronze is automatically the lowest total-cost option.

When a person qualifies for cost-sharing reductions, a Silver plan may provide meaningfully different out-of-pocket protection. The right choice depends on current eligibility, plan details, and expected care.
